The practice has its origins in 1981 when Michael West returned to the private sector from his public post as Southwark's Borough Planner and was joined by Christopher Francis to establish a town planning consultancy service. The new practice formed in 1992, in direct succession, was joined by Peter Long to serve a broad spectrum of clients with both town planning and full architectural services: clients including public authorities; corporate companies; and individual private citizens, across the United Kingdom. The practice embraces wide experience of commercial, industrial, office, residential and retail development with specialist expertise in a number of areas. More than thirty years' experience in housing for both public and private sectors, including individual clients, has been brought to bear on proposals for both new build and re-use of former commercial offices for student housing, new residential flats for the medical and nursing staff of Hospital Trusts, live/work and conversion of former industrial premises into private residential flats. In December 2002 permission was gained for the first phase of the redevelopment of a classic edge of centre brownfield site in Bedford. This was for 107 houses and flats which have been built by Kings Oak to our design. The Council has resolved to grant permission for the second phase of the scheme which will provide 260 apartments in buildings ranging from four to eight storeys together with a riverside park and we have submitted an application for the third phase comprising 254 apartments. Master plans for mixed residential and employment development are currently being developed in Leicester, Bedford and Mansfield. The practice has also been involved over the past six years in the development of small B1 and live/work accommodation on sites in Lewisham and Kingston and schemes for development in Wandsworth, Southwark, Enfield, Haringey and Lewisham. We also have a record for developing purpose built specialist large scale industrial units for occupier clients. At West & Partners we seek to make available to clients a considered range of alternatives which address the issues raised by each project. The ability, using computer aided design, to illustrate schemes is particularly useful to our clients both in project development and in negotiation with local planning authorities. The practice is also well versed in the realisation of projects on-site and working with other professional offices of the building team. |
